Hi. I am working on my partner's tree. He is a Fraser, the 2x great-grandson of John Alexander "Alex" Fraser and Catherine Hume. John Alexander "Alex" was born about 1811, apparently in Nova Scotia, Pictou area, as was his wife, Catherine Hume (born in NS in 1827 - but not sure where in NS). They had a number of children before setting out for Ontario, and later, on to Manitoba in the Portage la Prairie area.
They had all of their children, but one, in NS. Margery born 1847; Lachlan b. abt. 1848; Christina b. abt. 1850; Archibald "Archie" b.abt. 1852; possibly Hugh b. abt. 1856 (I say possibly because I cannot verify him as from this family); and finally, John Alexander Jr. born 1860 in Goodrich ON.
In 1861, Canadian Census places the family in Stanley, Huron, Ontario.
Alex applied for a land grant April 1, 1874 in the Portage la Prairie area, homestead number 1225.
In the 1906 Census of MB SK & AB, the now grown children of the family are located in Portage la Prairie MB.
Both Alex and Catherine are buried in the Prospect Cemetery in Portage la Prairie. Alex died in 1879, and Catherine in 1895.
I have been working with a few other descendants, and none of us has been able to find Alex's and Catherine's parents.
Is anyone able to help?
Thanks so much.
