Looking for my great-grandmother Harriette SMITH, d/o Edward SMITH and Frances GRANT Smith. Old family tree says she was "from" Picton, Nova Scotia. I assume (bad to do in genealogy) that should be Pictou. I'm also assuming that, since she was from there, she was probably born in Pictou County. DOB approximately 1836-1837.
She married my great-grandfather Charles Henry HAYWARD in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in 1858, died in Brighton, Victoria in 1865.
Why would she have gone to Melbourne? My ggf was a merchant from St. John's, Newfoundland, and, thus, may have had business dealings in Pictou. Perhaps they met there. Or possibly her parents took her to Australia and they met there. There was a gold rush in Victoria province in the 1850's.
Thanks in advance.

Me again...following up on my own post. My wife and I plan to be in the Pictou area October 4-5 as part of a sightseeing/genealogy driving trip in Canada. If anybody has any information on my great-grandmother as mentioned in my original post of March 17, I would like to communicate then or before then. Suggestions on where to look and what to look for would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Bob (stargazer)
